RINER, Va. (WFXR) — The Auburn Eagles they have won 2 of the last 3 Class 1 state baseball titles. One of the key players on the team is Carter Keith. Last Friday against George Wythe, Keith did something very unique in the game. You have heard of players being able to play multiple positions, but last Friday in Auburn’s 7-2 win over George Wythe, Carter played multiple positions in the game…in fact he played all 9 positions in the game. it is the first time it has happened in school history.
“Earlier this season coach wells brought up the idea of him playing 9 positions in the game he has been a very versatile player for us. For 4 years minus the 1 for COVID, he was a starting catcher for us his freshman year, he was all district and then in his sophomore year he was a starting center fielder and first team all state he has pitched for us and has played short we though we could move him around a couple of innings to play all 9 positions in a game,” said Auburn head baseball coach Eric Altizer. “It sounded like a lot of fun but of course I have never played first base before so I was a little nervous about that. I ended up really enjoying it it was a good memorable time,” said Keith.
Carter pitched in the 1st, he caught in the 2nd inning, 3rd inning he played all 3 out field positions, 4th inning he played 1st base, 5th inning he played 3rd, 2nd and shortstop. 6th inning he went back to center field. Speaking of centerfield, Carter says being a centerfielder is his best and favorite position. “I love centerfield that is 100 percent my favorite position now. I am not sure if I have a least favorite position. I love them all, I love them all,” said Keith. Carter said if he would like to play all 9 positions in a game again.
