Top 5 high school football games to watch this fall in Southwest Virginia

Friday Night Blitz

(WFXR) — While the pandemic shortened season gave us plenty of memories, it also set up a lot of storylines for the upcoming fall. And with a full schedule upon us, there’s a lot of mouth-watering match-ups to look forward to. We decided to do the hard work for you and come up with a list of the top five games to circle on your calendar this season.

  • Riverheads at Lord Botetourt – September 10
    • An intriguing match-up awaits us in Daleville where for the first-time Lord Botetourt hosts Riverheads. The Cavaliers, always a state contender but still seeking its maiden title, will take on the five-time Class 1 champions who haven’t lost a game in nearly three years.
  • William Fleming at Patrick Henry – September 18 (Saturday)
    • The two Roanoke City schools meet on a Saturday afternoon with William Fleming visiting Patrick Henry. It’s a rivalry renewed after the series took a year-long hiatus last year. Both programs made memorable playoff appearances in the spring and you can expect a playoff atmosphere when these two battle for Roanoke Pride and the Mayor’s Cup.
  • Salem at Pulaski County – October 8
    • Will this be the year that Pulaski finally beats Salem? The Spartans have had a stranglehold over the rivalry in the past decade but Mark Dixon’s Cougars may be on the rise in his second year at the helm, especially with the addition of former Auburn high school head coach Cam Akers to the staff. Pulaski seeks revenge against the defending Class 4 state champs.
  • E.C. Glass at Jefferson Forest – October 15
    • It’s going to be a Friday night to remember on October 15 with two super battles in the Seminole district. Jefferson Forest’s new head coach J.T. Crews hosts his former team, E.C. Glass. Crews was most recently an offensive coordinator under head coach Jeff Woody. We’ll see if the apprentice can beat his mentor.
  • Liberty Christian at Heritage – October 15
    • Over at City Stadium on the same night as Glass/Forest, Heritage hosts Liberty Christian in a rematch of a memorable playoff battle from the spring. That was when the Bulldogs dethroned the four-time defending regional champions. This time, Brad Bradley’s squad is looking for payback in a pivotal district showdown.
