Seminole District to allow fans to outdoor sporting events

Friday Night Blitz

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — On Wednesday afternoon, the school officials in the Seminole District decided no more than 250 spectators will be allowed to attend fall sports, falling within the guidance of Gov. Ralph Northam’s Executive Order 72.

According to a statement released by the Seminole District — which includes Amherst County, Brookville, E.C. Glass, Heritage, Jefferson Forest, Liberty, Liberty Christian, and Rustburg — on Wednesday, Feb. 24, the spectator allowance differs for indoor and outdoor sports, as outlined below:

Outdoor Sports

  • Only home-team spectators can attend the sporting event.
  • The total number of spectators cannot exceed any of the following: the lesser of 30 percent of the occupancy load of the certificate of occupancy for the venue, or 250 spectators per field. However, 250 spectators will be the max number of spectators at all Seminole District football games.
  • Each school will determine how to invite their 250 spectators and will communicate the invitation process with their school community.
  • While the VHSL has reported that schools are to include cheerleaders and band members within the spectator total, the committee has decided those students will be allowed to invite guests as well. As of right now, cheerleaders and Band members count towards the 250 spectators total.

Indoor Sports

  • Only home-team spectators can attend the sporting event.
  • The total number of spectators cannot exceed any of the following: the lesser of 30 percent of the occupancy load of the certificate of occupancy for the venue, or 25 spectators per gymnasium. However, 25 spectators will be the max number of spectators at all indoor fall sporting events.
  • Each school will determine how to invite their 25 spectators and will communicate the invitation process with their school community.

In addition, school officials say all Seminole District schools will follow the same practices listed below:

  • All invited guests will be allowed free admission to all fall sporting events.
  • Spectators from the visiting team are not permitted at any sporting events. However, games and matches will be live-streamed by the home team.
  • Temperature and health screenings for all spectators will take place for all indoor sporting events.
  • Masks must be properly worn over the nose and mouth at all times.
  • Ten feet of physical distancing in the stands, but households can sit together, as outlined in Order 72.
  • Concessions will not be available. Outside food and beverages will not be allowed in the stadium or gymnasium.
  • Spectating from cars or outside the stadium/field/course will not be allowed.
  • Spectators will not be allowed to congregate before or after the event.
  • For indoor sports, all spectators will need to exit the gymnasium in between Junior Varsity and Varsity matches to allow school officials the opportunity to sanitize the area.
  • Six feet of physical distancing will be maintained in the ticket/check-in line.
  • Guest invitations cannot be shared or reassigned. Only those on the guest list will be allowed admission.
  • Each school will follow all requirements of the current and future Governor’s Order and guidelines presented by the Virginia High School League (VHSL). These guidelines are subject to change with additional guidance from the VHSL and/or Governor’s Orders.

We understand how much our students and families have lost and sacrificed during this pandemic and we hope this opportunity to allow spectators for Fall sports competitions will allow our families to create lasting memories. We understand how important it is for students to have the support and encouragement of their loved ones during athletic competitions. We are appreciative of the Governor’s revision to the spectator limits and we remain committed to providing the safest environment possible for all our students, staff, spectators, and community-at-large.
