ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — Friday morning at North Cross School senior linebacker Michael Mack signed an National Letter of Intent in front of family and friends to go to the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. Mack who is from Rocky Mount, enrolled at North Cross three years ago joining his older brother, Jordan Mack ’20 who had already transferred to North Cross just two years prior.  In 2018 as a Sophomore, Michael was a welcomed addition as Linebacker to the Raiders football program, who won the VIC Conference Championship and were the VISAA Div II State Football Runner-ups that same year.  In 2019 as a Junior, Michael had a break-out season, earning 2nd team All-Conference and 2nd Team All-State as a LB, helping the Raiders win both the 2019 VIC Conference title again and alas, the coveted VISAA Div II State Football Championship, going 11-1 on the season, shutting out their opponents 5 times and who’s smothering defense gave up an average of only 6pts per game.  Despite a severely curtailed schedule due to COVID-19 this past fall, the Raiders still managed to play and win all 4 of their games in 2020, whereby Mack’s prowess on the defensive side of the ball held their opponents to a combined total of only 14 points scored this entire season!
During his time at North Cross, Michael was able to team up with his older brother on the boys varsity basketball team his Sophomore and Juniors years, playing a vital role for the Raiders and earning both First Team All-Conference and the team’s MVP in 2019.
“Michael is a gifted athlete, whose abilities transferred from the basketball court to the football field seamlessly,” stated North Cross Head Football Coach Stephen Alexander. “He made an immediate impact when he joined our team and then his impressive production during his junior year certainly warranted a Division 1 football offer.  I’m truly pleased to see Michael get this kind of opportunity and especially with the Naval Academy.”
