LYNCHBURG, Va. (WFXR) — Liberty Christian’s bid for a perfect season fell short in the Class 3 state championship game as the Bulldogs lost to Phoebus, 22-14, on Saturday at Williams Stadium in Lynchburg.
LCA trailed at halftime, 14-7, but was able to tie the game after quarterback Davis Lane connected with Dillon Stowers on fourth and one in the fourth quarter.
But Lane threw an interception that was returned for a touchdown by Donald Gatling Jr., which gave the Phantoms the lead for good. Lane was picked off again in the final minute to seal the championship for Phoebus.
The win marks the Phantoms’ first championship since 2011 and eighth in the past 20 years. The Bulldogs end the season with a 13-1 record after making their first-ever appearance in the VHSL championship.
