Friday Night Blitz Preseason Tour-North Cross Raiders

Friday Night Blitz

ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — We are one week away from the start of the high school football season, time for another stop on the Friday Night Blitz preseason tour. We head to Roanoke County for a look at the North Cross Raiders. The Raiders were the only school in our area to have a fall season last year. COVID did impact their schedule last year with only being able to play 4 games. The private school ranks didn’t have a playoff season. The Raiders are the defending state champs as they won the title in 2019. North Cross head coach Stephen Alexander said there were challenges to last season. They are excited to be in a normal season in 2021.

“We were happy to be out on the field playing. we also felt a lot of pressure. Our guys felt a lot of pressure due to all the issues surrounding COVID. So I felt there was a big weight on us. being the only local team to be playing ball. I am glad to make it through the season. We are happy thing are looking better right now,” said Alexander.

“Well last year we had to be real careful with everything we do. to follow all of the guidelines. Everyone was kinda watching us. I think that made us closer last year. I think with the returners we have so far this year it made us really close,” said senior strong safety and wide receiver Cross Thompson.

The Raiders open up the season next Friday at Nansemond Suffolk Academy.
