Appomattox survives wild Class 2 final vs. Stuarts Draft, claims back-to-back state titles

Friday Night Blitz

STUARTS DRAFT, Va. (WFXR) — Appomattox never trailed but the Raiders came close to falling behind numerous times on Saturday afternoon against Stuarts Draft.

Raider Nation claimed its fifth state title in six seasons after defeating the Cougars, 48-41, in a rematch of the 2019 final.

The two teams combined for 42 points in the third quarter with Stuarts Draft getting within three points after Austin Nice’s touchdown. But the Raiders got the break they needed when they recovered a fumble in the endzone for a touchdown to take a ten point lead.

“They made us push man. It’s the hardest game we’ve had all year,” sophomore running back Jonathan Pennix said. “We had to fight ’til the end, literally. I’m proud of my seniors. It was a very emotional moment for my seniors. It’s so crazy going through this. This was definitely what we needed. To face adversity and we had to fight all the way ’til the clock hit 0:00.”

The Raiders finish the season with a perfect 10-0 record.
