LYON, France (WFXR) — Three former UVA women’s soccer players, as well as current Cavaliers head coach Steve Swanson, played a role in the United States’ run to a fourth World Cup title.

Morgan Brian, Becky Sauerbrunn and Emily Sonnett were on the U.S. World Cup roster in France this year while Swanson served as an assistant coach under Jill Ellis.

This isn’t the first World Cup title for Brian and Sauerbrunn. Both played for the United States in its 2015 title run in Canada. Sauerbrunn also played a role in the 2011 World Cup in Germany.

“I mean it’s hard to put into words. We’ve worked so hard and we’ve put so much into this and every team has and credit to everyone who’s made this tournament. Netherlands had a great tournament,” Sauerbrunn said. “For us it just means so much and we had a really tough road to get to this final and we played alot of really excellent opponents so we feel like we really had to earn this.”
