MARTINSVILLE, Va. (WFXR) – For Martinsville Mustangs pitcher Will Davis, getting the chance to play baseball at Hooker Field is a dream come true.
“It’s definitely fun knowing that I’m here and I’m not to far away from home. I’ll have some family and friends in the crowd. I also came here to watch some of these games in high school, and I just thought that this league was such a high level of baseball. Now being able to play it. It’s just fun being able to be out here,” says Davis.
Davis is no stranger to the Martinsville area. During the school year he plays baseball 40 minutes down the road at Ferrum College. Now instead of watching the game from the bleachers, he’s living it.
“I never really had that thought until it happened. I come out here during the first game, and I think I use to sit there. Now I’m on the other side, and it’s just fun to think back on that,” explains Davis.
Davis has pitched in four games this season for Martinsville, and Mustangs pitching coach Clint Marsh is happy to have him on the team.
“He’s been great for us we use him out of the bullpen. He’ll start some over this summer. There’s not many kids like Will and it’s an honor to be able to coach him for this summer,” says Marsh.
For Davis, he’s grateful he gets a chance to play during the summer.
“I’m definitely just living in the moment. I don’t know what they’re going to do at Ferrum yet but obviously this is a big deal for Ferrum too. I know if I can come out here and play like I know how to play and just compete. Then I’ll be ready to get me in shape for school ball,” states Davis.
But in the end it’s all about seizing every opportunity out on the mound this season with the Mustangs.
“Since we had our seasons cut short at college, and being able to be back out here after four months or something of no baseball. It’s just a huge deal to be back out here and play and just have fun and just have the summer to just play ball,” says Davis.
For now Davis has no signs of slowing down, and continues to help his succeed on the field.
