ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) – The city of Roanoke played host to one of the largest soccer tournament’s in the Roanoke Valley. The annual Fall Kickoff Classic was held at the Rivers Edge Sports Complex and the Vineyard Soccer Complex in Vinton. Around 100 teams hit the pitch for the first day of competition, which concludes on Sunday. Squads from the Virginia, Tennessee, The Carolinas, and West Virginia were all represented on the field. For Valley United Club President Stephen Simon explains why the preseason tournament is important for the players as well as the Roanoke Valley.
“It’s a great feeling. As a parent you always want to see the kids out. It’s right before school some schools have already started everything. It’s a preseason tournament and people are just excited because they haven’t been doing soccer for all summer and in some cases they weren’t doing it in the spring because of COVID. So getting out here and just letting them run and having a good time and then with almost probably 60 teams from outside the area they’re staying in the Roanoke Valley. So, they’re experiencing the great attributes of our Roanoke Valley,” says Simon.
