Weeks after making a run to the state semifinals, two Lord Botetourt teammates are set to go their separate ways, joining rival Division I programs after signing commitments on Wednesday.
Jake Dewease will join the University of Virginia as a preferred walk-on while Jesse Hanson committed to the Virginia Tech Hokies.
Hanson grew up as a college football fan, partly because his parents are graduates of Clemson.
“To actually be doing it yourself is unreal,” Hanson said.
The Lord Botetourt offensive guard had already decided to play for the Hokies, even though other Division I offers came his way, including from Clemson.
“Tech is definitely where I belong,” Hanson said.
Dewease made his decision to walk-on to the Cavaliers squad over playing for Division III Washington & Lee.
“It’s great to be part of another family is something great,” DeWease said. “To take it to the next level feels amazing.”
And Dewease said he’s thankful to go through the process of finding a college program with his teammate, even though the two are headed to rival programs.
“We’ve known each other since elementary school and to be able to take that leap of faith together and have him by my side feels great,” Dewease said.
