LYNCHBURG, Va. (WFXR) — The 21st-ranked Virginia Tech softball team overcame a pair of two-run deficits to beat the Liberty University Flames 7-5 on Wednesday night at Liberty Softball Stadium. It was the Hokie’s second win over Liberty this season.
In a game called “The Battle of the ‘Burgs,” Liberty opened up the scoring in the first inning as Rachel Roupe hit a two-run home run. Then in the third inning, Virginia Tech’s Addy Greene nailed a solo home run to cut the Flame’s lead to 2-1.
In the bottom of the third, Liberty added a run, and Flames took the lead 3-1 Flames. The score would change in the fifth inning when Tech’s Kylie Aldridge hit a two-run home run to tie the game at 3.
Then in the bottom of the fifth, Liberty would get the two runs back on a Rachel Craine two-run double to take a 5-3 lead. Tech would get two runs in the sixth to tie the game at 5. Then in the seventh, the Hokies would get two runs to take a 7-5 lead and get the win.
Virginia Tech’s next action will come in the ACC Tournament next week. Liberty wraps up their regular season with a weekend series at Queens in Charlotte.
