RADFORD, Va. – The saying goes it’s hard to beat a team three times and the No. 3 Radford women’s lacrosse team proved that to be true as the Highlander downed No. 2 Campbell 15-14 in the Big South Tournament semifinals on Friday afternoon.
Ava Goeller had a career-high six goals in the match, leading all players. She notched her final two goals with less than six minutes to play. After Campbell took an 11-10 lead with five goals to start the second half, Jennifer Shield tied the game at 11 with 15:48 to play.
That sparked a 5-0 run by Radford that gave them a 15-11 lead. Campbell scored three goals in the final 2:04 but the lead was too much to overcome as the Highlanders earned their first win over the Camels, the first win in the Big South Tournament and advancing to their first-ever Big South Tournament final.
The Highlanders put up 10 first half goals thanks in large part to four by Goeller. Radford had heavy possession thanks in large part to Katie Bendrick, who had seven draw controls in the first half. Meanwhile on the defensive end, the Highlanders made some great stops as Maddie Bowman secured seven saves.
Radford took a 3-0 lead through the first five minutes and the Camels struck with 22:03 on the clock. The Highlanders then scored four of the next five goals over the next nine minutes and took a 7-2 lead midway through the opening period.
Campbell made a little run scoring three of the next four goals, cutting the Highlander lead to three, 8-5 with 6:46 to play in the first half. The Highlanders took a 10-6 lead into the locker room after Margaret Gleason scored a goal with 20 seconds left.
Shield was second among all players scoring with four goals. She also notched one assist. Bendrick notched eight draw controls and Bowman finished with 13 saves – just two shy of her career-high.
