LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Liberty softball team has cracked the USA Today/NFCA Top 25 Coaches Poll for the first time in program history, appearing at No. 25 in today’s poll. The Lady Flames also made their first appearance inside the Softball Collegiate Top 25 Poll, at No. 25 today.

The Lady Flames had received votes in 12 out of the first 13 NFCA Top 25 Coaches Polls this season prior to entering the Top 25 this week. Liberty had appeared among “Others Receiving Votes” in the USA Softball poll six times this season.

The 2021 USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 Poll is voted on by 32 NCAA Division I head coaches, one representing each conference. Records reflect games played through May 9. Programs not competing in 2021 will not be eligible for ranking consideration.

The Softball Collegiate Top 25 Poll is voted on by coaching representatives of 10 Division I Conferences in the 10 USA Softball Regions as well as members of the National and Local media who consistently cover Division I Softball across the country.

Liberty had been ranked in the Top 25 in one NCAA-recognized poll in program history, receiving a No. 22 ranking in Softball America’s 2019 preseason national poll.

The Lady Flames (39-13) have posted two wins over teams who are ranked in this week’s NFCA Top 25 Coaches Poll. Liberty downed current No. 6 Arkansas 2-0 in 10 innings on March 16 and posted a 5-3, nine-inning walk-off victory over No. 20 Virginia Tech on April 28.

The Lady Flames compete in the 2021 ASUN Softball Championship semifinals, opening play on Thursday at 3 p.m. against No. 3 South Division Seed Jacksonville at Kennesaw State’s Bailey Park. The championship game will be held on Saturday at 1 p.m., with the winner earning the ASUN’s automatic bid to the 2021 NCAA Division I Softball Championship.
