CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WFXR) — Virginia will compete in the first-ever Wasabi Fenway Bowl in Boston on Dec. 29 at 11 a.m. against Southern Methodist University.

The bowl game will mark Bronco Mendenhall’s last as UVA’s head coach after announcing his resignation on Thursday after six seasons at the helm.

The game itself will feature two firsts – it will mark the first college football game to be played at the historic home of the Boston Red Sox, Fenway Park and it will be the first time these two teams ever competed against each other.

With the exception of Mendenhall’s first season in 2016 when Virginia went 2-10, the Cavaliers have qualified for a bowl game every season since then.

UVa appeared in the Military Bowl in 2017, won the Belk Bowl in 2018 against South Carolina and played in the Orange Bowl in 2019 against Florida. The program opted not to compete in a bowl game in 2020, citing difficulties during the coronavirus pandemic.

Virginia finished the 2021 season with a 6-6 record, suffering four straight losses at the end of the year after a 6-2 start.

This marks the 22nd bowl appearance for the Wahoos.

The Wasabi Fenway Bowl will be televised on ESPN.
