LYNCHBURG, Va. (WFXR) — The No. 4-ranked University of Lynchburg men’s lacrosse team will begin the chase for the 2021 NCAA Division III championship at home on Shellenberger Field.
Lynchburg is one of eight predetermined host sites for the national tournament’s first and second rounds, the NCAA announced Sunday night with the presentation of the full championship bracket. The Old Dominion Athletic Conference champions will square off with Pfeiffer in the first round Saturday, May 15 at 1 p.m. Stevens and Catholic will play in the other first-round matchup at 4 p.m. Saturday with the winners scheduled to square off at 2 p.m. Sunday.
Lynchburg carries a 16-2 record into the NCAA tournament — the most wins in Division III this season — and the Hornets are fresh off the program’s eighth ODAC championship, a 16-6 win over Washington and Lee on Saturday. The Hornets are appearing in their 10th-straight national tournament and are 8-2 all-time in NCAA action on Shellenberger Field.
Pfeiffer enters the tournament for the first time in program history as the USA South Athletic Conference champions. The Falcons sport a 12-1 record. Lynchburg is 2-1 all-time against Pfeiffer, the last meeting a 15-7 Hornets win April 23, 1994.
Catholic brings an unblemished 8-0 record and a Landmark Conference championship into the NCAA postseason. The Cardinals, who are receiving votes in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association’s coaches poll, will be making their third NCAA tournament appearance.
Stevens comes to Lynchburg following its MAC Freedom championship with a 13-2 record. The Ducks are also receiving votes in the USILA’s coaches poll and are in the championship bracket for the 11th time in program history.
The winner of the Lynchburg pod will advance to the national quarterfinals on May 22 at Salisbury University in Salisbury, Md., another predetermined site, with the NCAA semifinals scheduled for the following day.
The championship game will take place Sunday, May 30 at 4 p.m. at Rentschler Field in East Hartford, Conn.
