LYNCHBURG, Va. (WFXR) – Liberty University announced Wednesday morning that head football coach Hugh Freeze is locked in with the Flames for the next seven years after his contract was extended through the 2028 season.
“We are grateful for Coach Freeze’s outstanding leadership of our football program and positive impact on our student-athletes,” said Director of Athletics Ian McCaw. “Liberty football continues to thrive and we are excited that Coach Freeze will lead our transition into Conference USA.”
The Flames — currently in their third season under Freeze — have a 25-10 record and are bowl eligible for the third straight season, according to the university.
This news comes as the team enters its final regular season game against Army with a 7-4 record, looking for their third-straight season with eight or more wins, as well as the 13th eight-plus win season in program history.
Liberty posted a 10-1 record last year, even finishing No. 17 in the final Associate Press poll following a thrilling win over No. 9 Coastal Carolina in the FBS Mortgage Cure Bowl.

Freeze has guided Liberty to back-to-back bowl wins, allowing the Flames to become the second transitioning team in NCAA history to win consecutive bowl games during its first two full seasons at the FBS level.
Since arriving on Liberty Mountain on Dec. 7, 2018, Freeze has quickly helped answer the question if Liberty can succeed at the FBS level.
The Flames capped their first season under Freeze with a 23-16 victory over Sun Belt Conference member Georgia Southern in the 2019 FBC Mortgage Cure Bowl on Dec. 21 at Exploria Stadium in Orlando, Fla.
With the victory, Liberty became the third FBS transitioning team in NCAA history to win a bowl game during its first full season at the FBS level. Liberty posted an 8-5 record in 2019.
Freeze has guided Liberty to a series of “first” during his three seasons with the Flames. Last year, Liberty earned its first-ever national ranking, first win over an ACC opponent, the best start in school history (8-0 to start 2020), first-ever win over a top-25 FBS program and back-to-back bowl game wins.
Liberty defeated a pair of ACC foes in Syracuse and in-state opponent Virginia Tech in 2020. The two wins made Liberty the first non-Power 5 team to post a pair of wins over Power 5 schools in the same season since Houston in 2015.
Today’s contract extension notice will give Freeze the chance to add another “first” to his Liberty coaching resume. Three weeks ago, Liberty announced it would be moving its athletics department to Conference USA starting with the 2023-24 season, giving Freeze a chance to win Liberty’s first-ever FBS conference championship in 2023.Liberty University Athletics
