BLACKSBURG, Va. (WFXR) — The Virginia Tech wrestling team will make its long awaited return to the Moss Arts Center in Blacksburg, competing on the stage for the first time in two years as the Hokies host George Mason in their first dual meet of 2022.
Virginia Tech rose two spots this week to No. 8 in the country as it gets set to host the Patriots. Saturday will mark the first meeting between the two programs in six years.
“It’s always a great place to wrestle. I think our fans enjoy it,” head coach Tony Robie said. “Hopefully everything that is going on with the current Covid situation doesn’t hurt the crowd. It’s a little harder to social distance in there but we’re excited about it and we’re hoping we get a great turnout.”
Robie’s squad includes eight wrestlers that are nationally ranked, including graduate transfer Nathan Traxler. The 13th ranked grappler in the heavyweight division is set to make his Moss Arts Center debut on Saturday afternoon.
“I remember watching actually Virginia Tech dual I think Missouri. I think I was, I might’ve been a freshman I remember in college and I remember thinking it was super cool,” Traxler said. “It’s just awesome to bring it full circle now. Getting to experience it on my own for myself so I’m really excited to have that experience.”
The curtain rises at Moss Arts at 4 p.m.
