Highlanders Men Receive Three First-Place Votes In Big South Preseason Poll; Tabbed Fourth In North Division

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Radford Men’s Basketball team received three first-place votes and was picked to finish fourth in the North Division in the 2021-22 Big South Men’s Basketball Preseason Poll, the conference announced on Wednesday morning.

A year ago, Radford went 15-12 overall and 12-6 in conference play to place second in the regular season standings despite being picked sixth in the preseason poll. A 9-5 record in home games at the Dedmon Center was key to the team’s success.

Now the Highlanders enter their first year under head coach Darris Nichols, who has returned to his hometown of Radford, Va. following the departure of Mike Jones for UNC Greensboro. Nichols surrounded himself with a young and energetic coaching staff including his older brother, Shane Nichols.

Veteran players Chyree WalkerDravon MangumJosiah Jeffers, and Lewis Djonkam all return from last year, with Shaquan JulesKeishon PorterJoshua WalkerBryan Hart, and Xavier Lipscomb each coming back to join them.

Coach Nichols and his staff brought in a slew of talented new players as well. Rashun Williams (South Florida), Tai’Reon Joseph (Austin Peay), Artese Stapleton (Lewis University), Camron McNeil (Spartanburg Methodist), and Roshaun Black (Seminole State College) transferred into the program and Derrick Jones Jr. joins the Highlanders from the high school ranks.

Fans can get their first look at this year’s team on Thursday, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. during Radford Basketball Fan Fest. Radford will also take on Eastern Mennonite in an open-to-the-public exhibition game at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 1.
