From the Big South to the SoCon: Mike Jones departs Radford for UNCG

GREENSBORO, NC (WFXR) — After spending the last decade with Radford, Mike Jones was introduced as the new head coach of UNC-Greensboro on Monday afternoon.

Jones replaces Wes Miller, who left to take over the Cincinnati Bearcats men’s basketball program last week.

The two-time Big South Coach of the Year led the Highlanders to 174 wins during his tenure, which began in 2011. Those wins included the program’s first-ever NCAA tournament victory in 2018.

After his introductory press conference, Jones says the job was too good to pass up.

“The success that this program has had over the years, also knowing some of the former coaches that have coached here and their reputations as coaches and then the area itself,” Jones said. “There’s so many great high school coaches and AAU programs in this area with so much talent.”

The Spartans won the Southern Conference championship this past season, earning the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA tournament, where it lost to Florida State in the first round.

Jones’ resume impressed UNCG athletic director Kim Record.

“Mike Jones has been on my radar for a very long time,” Record said. “We played against Radford, I’m aware of what he has done, I’m aware of the background that he has.”

An announcement on who will take over the Highlanders’ program is expected this week.
