LYNCHBURG, Va. (WFXR) — While UVA and Virginia Tech will be of this weekend, Liberty finally gets its season underway on Saturday when the Flames travel to Western Kentucky.
And just as they embark on game week, second-year head coach Hugh Freeze was ready to name a starting quarterback on Monday morning.
Malik Willis will get the nod as he takes over after Buckshot Calvert graduated.
The Auburn transfer won a three-way battle for the position during camp, beating out Chris Ferguson and Johnathan Bennett.
The announcement of a starting QB is just one more sign of a season ready to kickoff after the mental challenges of the last few months.
“I certainly can’t think of another season that I’ve been a part of that was more mentally challenging,” Freeze said. “This has been the span of what since March. The mental taxing and challenging that has faced all of us in college football, particularly those of us who are trying to get to game week with a full roster has been unlike any other. I think our kids have handled it as well as possible.”
