BLACKSBURG, Va. (WFXR) — It’s a match made in Hokie Heaven — and it’s been on full display all over social media!
At the Biltmore in Asheville, N.C. in July 2021, Virginia Tech football player Jesse Hanson proposed to his girlfriend, Virginia Tech softball player Maddie Rountree — and of course she said yes.
Hanson and Rountree’s relationship and love for each other grew during the COVID-19 pandemic as they spent a lot of time together during isolation over the last two years. Their connection and understanding for each other led to special proposal last July in North Carolina.
“After the whole season, we started getting together and I was looking for places to go visit near Blacksburg. The Biltmore House came up in Asheville,” said Hanson. “It looked like the most beautiful place in the world, so I took her down there, I got a photographer. The whole gardens are just, like, acres of flowers, so that’s where I figured I would do it.”
A lot of the couple’s family and friends knew about Hanson’s plan to propose to Rountree…except Rountree.
“I went to see my friend Kate, she’s one of my bridesmaids, in Kansas City the week before and she told me to get my nails done for this trip, so I’m like, ‘okay, like, I know it’s coming soon because we’re at that point in our relationship,'” recalled Rountree. “Anyways, I got my nails done and I was like, ‘no, this is just a good couples trip, I’m excited,’ and we had like this great day at the Biltmore and I was thinking to myself, ‘oh that would have been a perfect day for a proposal’ and I had already gotten it out of my head. It’s funny because my feet were actually starting to hurt so bad because I had uncomfortable shoes on and I told him ‘I don’t want to go to the gardens, I want to go home’ and he was, like, ‘no, we have to go to the gardens,’ and I didn’t still think anything of it, but yeah I was very surprised.”
With Hanson and Rountree soon becoming a married couple, they feel with both of them being student athletes, it will grow their relationship since they both understand each other as student athletes.
“There’s a lot of couples, you know, when you’re so busy all of the time, it’s hard to be, but with us, I know she’s at practice, I know she’s doing this, and she knows I’m doing this, and then when we see each other and we’re both tired, I don’t know, it’s just easier to encourage each other,” explained Hanson.
Hanson and Rountree are set to get married on July 2 at 4:19 p.m. There is significance of the date and time. July 2 represents the seventh month and second day, which combines to 72, Hanson’s jersey number. Meanwhile, Rountree’s jersey number is 19 ,which is part of the 4:19 time.
