ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — On Tuesday, voters will decide on a new delegate to represent Virginia’s 24th District. The seat was previously held by Ronnie Campbell who passed away in December after a battle with cancer.

Early voting for the special election ended on Saturday and in-person voting is on Tuesday from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Rockbridge County Director of Elections, Sheila Hall says 719 people participated in early voting which was a significant amount for just seven days.

There are two candidates looking to fill the seat for the remainder of 2023. Ronnie Campbell’s wife, Ellen Campbell and Jade Harris, a 25-year-old who was elected the first Vice Mayor of The Town of Glasgow.

Harris told WFXR, “I know I’m only 25 but I think I’ve got the experience for this job. I think I’m the most experienced candidate. I know I can get it done, I have the energy, I have the enthusiasm.”

She says if elected, she wants to address funding for infrastructure, education, and mental health care.

“We need expanded access to mental health care especially in areas like this where depression is so rapid. I mean we have such a hard job market here. That just leads to depression, that leads to other issues, it leads to addiction, which I know mental health care resources can help with,” said Harris.

Republican opponent, Ellen Campbell has a background in banking and spent years by her husband’s side while he served the Shenandoah Valley. “When he passed I couldn’t think of a better way to honor his legacy and memory than to fill his position,” said Campbell.

Campbell is also looking to address education and also continue in her husband’s advocacy for public safety. She said, “We need to make sure that we keep our community safe by supporting our law enforcement officers in making sure that they’re paid well and that they have the equipment and supplies that they need.”

Hall says the registrar’s office sent out 500 absentee ballots and has gotten about half of them back.

If you aren’t registered to vote, same-day registration will also be available on Tuesday.

Virginia’s 24th District includes Rockbridge and Bath counties, the cities of Buena Vista and Lexington, and parts of Amherst and Augusta counties.
