Vehicle fire causes southbound delays on I-81 in Washington County

UPDATE 4:56 p.m.: The traffic backups disappeared over the course of Saturday afternoon, but VDOT has closed the southbound exit again near mile marker 20 on I-81 in response to the earlier vehicle fire.

The southbound right shoulder is also still closed at the site of the vehicle fire, according to VDOT.

UPDATE 1:55 p.m.: Crews have reopened the southbound right lane near mile marker 20 on I-81.

However, VDOT says there is still a one-mile backup from the scene of the vehicle fire because the southbound right shoulder is still closed and the exit ramp is narrowed.

WASHINGTON COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — Southbound motorists along I-81 in Washington County can expect delays on Saturday afternoon due to a vehicle fire near mile marker 20.

According to the Virginia Department of Transportation, the southbound right lane, right shoulder, and exit ramp are closed around mile marker 20, which has backed up traffic along I-81 for two miles.
