ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — William Ray, the man charged with the murders of April Barnicoat and Eric Surface, confessed to the crime on July 31, 2020, according to search warrants recently obtained by WFXR.
The documents show Ray arrived at the Roanoke Police Department on July 31 and confessed to the murders that occurred on March 1, 2020.
The documents also show that Ray alleged he was “abducted by several suspects” on the morning of March 1, 2020. He alleged two different stories in reference to the abduction, according to the warrants.
However, authorities have yet to find evidence or video surveillance supporting Ray’s abduction story. Authorities were able to retrieve video from the apartment complex which showed a person matching Ray’s description leaving on foot from across the street from where the murder incident occurred, about an hour before police responded.
The Roanoke City Grand Jury indicted Ray on two counts of first-degree murder. His next hearing is set for September 8.
