Two killed in a triple shooting in Roanoke

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — Police are investigating a shooting that officers came across when running a late night patrol.

The officers were in the area of Patterson Avenue SW around 2 a.m. on Wednesday when they heard several shots fired nearby.

Officers proceeded to Orange Avenue and 11th Street NW when they came across a car driving east on Orange Avenue.

The car stopped in the 800 block of Orange Avenue NW, that’s when officers found three people that had been shot.

A woman was pronounced dead on scene, and two men were taken to the hospital by Roanoke Fire-EMS. One man died in the hospital.

“There were just so many blue lights. The only thing I could think of, is I knew something terrible had happened,” says Montaisha Wright, who was near the scene.

Wright says she could hear police sirens. But over the sound of those sirens, she could hear a woman screaming.

She was screaming at the top of her lungs. Just no, no, no repeatedly,” says Wright.

The triple shooting comes just days after a remembrance event held in Roanoke for those affected by gun violence. Some say it’s an all too common occurrence in the area.

“Shootings happen all the time around here. It’s nothing new. It’s just something these little kids doing nowadays,” says Sean Fleming, who lives nearby.

Many say they are unsure what, if anything, can be done to curb the violence, which WFXR previously reported is on the rise when compared to last year.

“What can be done honestly? Once things have gotten so far out of hand, people are going to continue to rise with violence,” says Wright.

“Back in the day, there was never this much gun violence. Now, guns are getting out of control. It’s a new generation out here,” says Fleming.

But some are still holding out hope.

“Roanoke is a small city. People need to come together. People need to understand that people are going to die if we continue with this route,” says Wright.

Hoping that the sight of blue lights and yellow police tape will become less frequent, and that fewer lives will be lost to gun violence.

Officers have not arrested any suspects at this time. The victims’ identities have not yet been made public.
