Two Floridians plead guilty to highway robbery on Interstate 81


ABINGDON, Va. (WFXR) — A Florida man and woman plead guilty to multiple federal charges related to the robbery of a Wythe County travel plaza.

Michael Wilson and Perla Pineda-Osorio were driving a stolen vehicle when they committed a robbery at the I-81 Travel Plaza.

Court documents show Wilson and Pineda-Osorio were picked up in South Carolina, on May 28, 2018 along with a third person, posing as hitchhikers.

The group pulled their guns out on the driver and demanded to be driven to multiple ATMs to withdraw money from his account.

They then dropped off the driver on the side of the road and stole his car.

The trio then robbed a convenience store in Charlotte and Jonesville in North Carolina. That same night, they robbed the Travel Plaza in Wythe County.

The stolen car was seen by authorities and a high-speed chase followed.

During the chase, the car wrecked and the three were taken into custody.

Over the course of the investigation, authorities learned the weapons used in the robberies were BB guns.

Each defendent faces a maximum of 35 years in prison. The third suspect, Christyen Sumpter, is scheduled to plead guilty on July 25.
