FRANKLIN COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — Two men are in custody for the alleged rape of a woman at Smith Mountain Lake Community Park.
A woman reported to responding deputies that she had been raped, and her assailant ran into the woods nearby.
Investigators later determined that a group of people, two women and three men, were at the park together drinking. Sammy Hamadeh and Jorge Pena were part of that group when they allegedly assaulted one of the girls they were with.
Both men are being held without bond.
Representatives with a local sexual assault crisis center say alcohol is often used as a tool during sexual assault.
“The role of consent isn’t just something we should see with sexual interactions, but in every interaction,” said Laura Guilliams, who is the Sexual Assault Response and Awareness (SARA) Director of Crisis Services. “It should be a very common and very well practiced tool for communication with people in our lives.”
Guilliams wants to remind people they have a crisis hotline, counseling, and other services. To learn more, visit their website: https://sararoanoke.org/ .
