ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) – Today, three more localities in Southwest Virginia are set to discuss whether or not they will become Second Amendment sanctuaries.

The City of Covington, Pulaski, and Roanoke County will discuss similar resolutions, as more and more counties approve their resolutions designed to protect their gun rights.

After a heated discussion Monday, Dec. 3, Roanoke City will not join the growing list of Second Amendment sanctuaries after Mayor Sherman Lea declined to schedule a vote regarding the issue.

Following his announcement, more than half of the room stormed out in protest, many of them gun rights activists.

The Second Amendment sanctuary title does not carry any legal muscle but serves as a statement of opposition to potential gun reform in the next legislative session, where the Virginia General Assembly is controlled by Democrats.

With a growing number of Virginia localities becoming Second Amendment sanctuaries, we’ve created a list to keep you up-to-date with all the latest changes.

As of Dec. 9, 2019, 45 Virginia counties have adopted resolutions to become Second Amendment sanctuaries.
