The American Red Cross celebrates 140 years of helping and healing

Roanoke Valley News

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — The American Red Cross is celebrating a milestone: its 140th birthday! Volunteers were honored on Thursday at four separate events throughout the Commonwealth.

The Southwest Virginia Chapter of American Rec Cross in the Virginia Region provided a socially distant, drive-thru event at the Berglund Center from noon to 2 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 21.

Volunteers were given a Birthday Pin, a cookie, and a special gift — a baseball hat with the Red Cross logo — to thank them for their service as a volunteer.

In the 140 years since Clara Barton founded the American Red Cross, people have come together in innovative ways to serve and provide hope during emergencies.

This commitment has always been at the heart of what they do — uniting individuals from all backgrounds to chart the path forward for future generations, so families are never alone during times of crisis.

Organizers always encourage you and others to join the Red Cross mission by volunteering, giving blood, learning lifesaving skills, or making a financial donation. Your support will help provide relief and care wherever it’s needed.
