Store sells armor plates for kids’ backpacks to protect against bullets

Some parents are still shopping for back to school supplies. But there’s one item you have have never considered-armor plates that can fit in your child’s backpack.

“After the Sandy Hook shootings, we came up with this idea of putting armor in kids backpacks and book bags,” says Bob Carpentieri, president of CW Armor.

The Vinton store has sold the armor plates for the last several years. The start of the school year is a popular time for parents to purchase the panels to insert in their child’s backpack.

‘They could use that book bag and anything happens at their school and they’re trying to run away, they could use it as a shield. You teach your children, just like you do at home about fire drills,” says Carpentieri.

The store says it also sees more people buying them in the days following a mass shooting. The armor plate is designed to be bullet-resistant and can serve as protection from most rounds that are fired from a handgun.

“Some people don’t think this is necessary, but we don’t twist anybody’s arm to buy our stuff,” says Carpentieri.

And some parents do feel like it is a necessary measure.

“You see all those shootings that happened a few days ago. Even grown-ups should carry one of those,” says father of five, Samuel Garcia.

CW Armor also has armor panels that can be inserted into t-shirts and worn by adults. Carpentieri encourages anyone considering purchasing body armor to do their research in order to make the most informed decision. He says CW Armor sends their armor to an independent lab for testing in order to be certified.
