State Police advising motorists to keep an eye on travel and weather forecasts this Holiday weekend

RICHMOND, Va. (WFXR) – With Hurricane Dorian churning towards the southeast coast, the Virginia State Police is urging those travelling to keep their eyes on the road. Travel experts are calling for a high volume of travelers hitting Virginia’s roadways.

Virginia State Police’s traffic safety and enforcement efforts are part of Operation CARE – Crash Awareness Reduction Effort, a national, state-sponsored traffic safety program aiming to reduce traffic crashes, fatalities and injuries caused by distracted driving, speeding and failing to use occupant restraints.

The 2018 Labor Day weekend experienced a significant rise in fatal crashes in the Commonwealth where 14 individuals died during the four-day holiday statistical counting period, compared to five deaths in 2017 and eight deaths in 2016.
