SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKE, Va. (WFXR) — The Second More than Pink Drinks and Links event raised $50,000 for the Virginia Blue Ridge Affiliate of Susan G. Komen.

“I’m still wrapping my head around how much we were able to raise in just our second year,” said Melanie Wheeler, who spearheaded the fundraising events, which included a party and auction on Aug. 3 and a golf tournament on Aug. 5. “This accomplishment really speaks volumes to the spirit and generosity of this community, our sponsors and volunteers.”

The party and auction took place at The Waterfront and included gourmet food, drink, dancing to live music from local bands, and one-of-a-kind raffle that culminated with an exciting golf ball drop on the putting green at the end of the evening.

A total of 56 golfers participated in the tournament with sponsor David Miller’s team of Clayton Carver, Sam Fansler, Matt Zambrano, and Ryan Hull finishing first.

According to Catherine Warren, Executive Director of Susan G. Komen Virginia Blue Ridge Affiliate, the $50,000 donation will help further the organization’s mission to meet the most critical needs in our local communities and invest in breakthrough research to prevent and cure breast cancer.

“We are so honored to be the beneficiary of the More Than Pink Drinks and Links event,” Warren said. “We give our heartfelt thanks to the committee and supporters of More Than Pink Drinks and Links for their hard work and generosity.”

Planning will begin soon for the 2020 More Than Pink Drinks & Links.
