Roanoke City Council listened to feedback for the new Parks and Recreation Master plan and will be considering adding plans for a new skate park.
The Wasena skate park is one of Eli Merritt’s favorite spots. When he and his grandmother Diane heard it could be going away with no plans to replace it they were upset.
“I really was under the impression that it was going to be remodeled and redone, and yes there are a few more in the area, but when we you ask him what park he wants to go to its always Wasena,” said Diane Merritt.
Dozens of people with ‘Roanoke Skatepark Initiative’ showed up to the public hearing Monday to ask leaders to reconsider and put a skate park on the priority list.
Melissa Webster is a board member with the Roanoke Skate Park Initiative. She says the meeting went and she’s looking forward to future plans.
“Moving forward I’m really hoping for land and a plan. As council said many times, money is tight. Everything is a priority to someone. And while we are just a small cross-section of the community in the valley, we’re very ready to help,” said Webster.
City council members decided to take the feedback and try to figure out a way to put the skate park in the plan. They plan to vote on a new master plan at the August 5th meeting.
It’s a plan that city officials, like the Director of Parks and Recreation Michael Clark, agree with.
“We’ll go back and rework the plan to include construction on the skate park somewhere in the timeline for the master plan. As well as some temporary solutions to hold us over until we can build the large skate park that we want to build.”
