UPDATE: Deputies identify victim, suspect in deadly Amherst shooting

AMHERST, Va. (WFXR) – The Amherst County Sheriff’s Office has released identities of the victim and suspect in Tuesday’s deadly shooting.

Deputies got on-scene shortly after 3 p.m. and found a man dead from an apparent gunshot wound inside a home in the 100 block of Riverview Road in Madison Heights.

The man deputies found dead inside a back room of the home was identified as John Austin of Madison Heights. It was a discovery Sheriff E.W. Viar describes as tragic.

“These are good people. We’ve never been here for calls of service. These are good families. Just a sad thing to happen to this family,” said Sheriff Viar.

Chad Austin was taken into custody on-scene without incident and has been charged with 2nd-degree murder and Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony. Deputies say they took him into custody in the front yard of the home.

“We just want everyone to know that he is in custody. There’s no danger to the community or anything like that,” Sheriff Viar said.

No official word from the sheriff’s office, but neighbor tell WFXR the alleged shooter was the son of the victim.

Those who live in the area described the neighborhood as fairly quiet. Like Mable Wesley who’s lived in the area for about 30 years.

“Normally it’s peaceful and it’s very quiet. And everybody is very neighborly,” said Wesley, who also says she knew the victim.

“Very nice, the whole family is very nice.”

Wesley says when she first heard the news, her reaction was to pray for everyone involved.

“It can happen to anybody. You don’t know what state of mind the person was in. What the person was going through then. Anybody can snap.”

Sheriff Viar says the next will be for Chris Austin to have a hearing and he will hire or be assigned an attorney.
