FRANKLIN CO., (WFXR)- December 5, 2019 marks six years since the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office found the remains of 53-year-old Ricky Dodson who had been murdered.
Polly Dodson, Ricky’s mother, can remember the day like it was yesterday.
“They came here and told me that they had found him. That they had found a body and they was pretty positive it was Ricky,” said Polly Dodson. “I already knew. When they said they had found a body, I knew. They didn’t have to tell me they were sending him to Roanoke or wherever for autopsy or whatever they did.”
Ricky’s body was found nearly two months to the day after he was reported missing.
“So, I knew something and I think we all did, and I kept telling them that, but they kept thinking that he was hiding out somewhere or had left the area until they finally found him,” said Polly.
The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office began searching for Ricky in early-October of 2013, after his girlfriend Vicky Purdy was found dead.
Polly Dodson said she came home from visiting her brother when she learned Ricky was missing.
“I come on home and first thing I stopped at Frances’ and she told me the police was looking for me. They wanted me to file a missing persons report on Ricky,” Polly said. “So, I hadn’t been back but a few minutes when they showed up and I filed the missing person report.”
Vicky’s body was found on October 6, 2013. She was found with a gunshot wound to the head and burned in a car, in the 2000 block of Philpott Road in Franklin County.
“It was terrible because you knew and the bad thing was that day, a few days after that had happened, we drove out through that road where they found his [Ricky’s] body,” Polly said.
She went on to say, “And it was buzzards circling over where they found him at and some of them mentioned and I said they’re just migrating south. It ain’t nothing. I didn’t think nothing about it. When we did find out, when they did find him, that’s where he was at.”
According to investigators, Ricky and Vicky were both last seen alive by Ricky’s nephew, Daniel Duncan, while they were at his home in the early-morning hours of October 4, 2013.
Vicky was found dead two days later. Ricky’s body was found two months later off Johnson Hill Road, just down the street from where Vicky was found.
The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office said drugs played a factor in both murders. Investigators added that Vicky may have worked as a confidential informant in the past, but couldn’t say for which agencies or whether she was at the time of her murder.
The Sheriff’s Office has a person or persons of interest in the case, but won’t say whom. They’ve conducted hundreds of interviews, a federal grand jury, processed the scenes, and issued a number of search warrants.
Investigators know there are people out there who know the truth; and they need those people to come forward and tell the truth of what happened to the couple so that Ricky and Vicky’s families can finally have answers.
“I’d like to know who done it. Who all was involved in it and hope that they find them and hopefully this will help a little bit. Someone will say ‘Yeah, I know this or I know that.’ If they’ll just tell the right people,” Polly said.
