RODERFIELD, WV (WVNS) — Deputies in McDowell County were called to a train derailment on Thursday, April 25, 2019.  It happened just before noon in the Roderfield area along U.S. Route 52.

Norfolk Southern officials said the train was headed to Bellevue, Ohio.  According to a release from the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office, one of the cars struck an underpass structure that crosses Route 52.  That knocked an axle off the train and into the roadway along with other debris.

The mixed-freight train was empty and not carrying any cargo and there were no injuries.  The roadway was reopened by 1:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Railway crews were still on the scene working to re-rail two cars which left the track but remained upright.  According to Norfolk Southern, rail traffic is moving regularly through the area on a parallel main line and there are no delays.  Officials with the company said the cause of the derailment is under investigation.
