ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — The Roanoke Police Department is searching for a white or cream colored sedan after a man died in a pedestrian-related crash.
On September 3, just before 6:15 p.m., Roanoke Police were dispatched to the intersection of Salem Turnpike and Calvary Road NW regarding a motor vehicle crash involving a pedestrian.
Officers found an adult male just off the roadway with serious injuries. Roanoke Fire-EMS transported the man to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. The victim has been identified as Albert Cager Jr., 55, of Roanoke.
No vehicles were located on scene. Witnesses say they saw a vehicle traveling east on Salem Turnpike NW. The victim was crossing the roadway when the vehicle struck Cager.
The vehicle did not remain on scene and continued traveling east on Salem Turnpike after it collided with him.
Joseph Heitz says his neighbor Albert Cager was a creature of habit and wasn’t doing anything out of the ordinary yesterday.
“He was a nice guy. Just sat there minding his own business. Did his own thing everyday. He was a routine man. He would cross the street at the same time everyday to get his mail.”
“Somebody just carelessly driving down the road not paying attention and it caused somebody to lose their live over it. And it’s just sad to see somebody just keep on going.”
Now, there are flowers laying where it happened as a memorial. And police are still looking for the driver responsible.
“Turn yourself in because in the video it shows that it was an accident. So I would just hope that you would have the heart to let this man’s family move on from this.”
Heitz is hoping that the video from his camera will help police find the person behind the wheel.
“I hope that it’s all they need. I hope with everything they can see from it, it shows the entire action of it from the start to the end. And I hope this is what they use to get this guy because somebody shouldn’t run from something like that.”
Fatality Investigators are asking for the public’s help locating this vehicle. Witnesses state that the suspect was driving a cream or white colored older model four door sedan.
