Roanoke-area Democrats flocked to Food Fanatics Kitchen Wednesday evening for a 2020 Democratic presidential debate watch party. It’s the first debate this year, with 10 hopefuls on stage – the rest of the candidates will face off tomorrow.
The restaurant stayed open for an extra hour and organizers passed out political bingo sheets, with spaces like “man interrupts a woman,” “immigration,” and “candidate bashes someone not on stage.”
The majority of people supporting a particular candidate were rooting for Elizabeth Warren, the only one on stage Wednesday polling in the top five.
Others were more interested in a major issue, like LGBTQ rights, while some just hoped to learn more about – as they say – the nearly two dozen alternatives to President Trump.
“We are here as a commmittee to promote Democrats and help people try to figure out who they would like to see as the next president,” said Mark Lazar, a member of the Roanoke City Democratic Committee.
“I’m hoping that Warren stands out a lot and separates herself from the rest of the pack, and I feel like she can do that very well because she has literally a plan for everything,” said 17-year-old Louis Garcia, president of the Roanoke Young Democrats.
Lazar says his group will be back again Thursday and hopes anyone and everyone interested in the political process will come join.
