ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — Roanoke County Public Schools will hold job fairs on September 10 and September 11.
The job fairs will be held at the school system central office located at 5937 Cove Road, behind the Roanoke County Public Safety Building.
On September 10, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., the school system is seeking applicants for nutrition associates.
“When they’re working with students for breakfast or for lunch, and coming in with that smiling face and really helping students have a great day, those make such a huge difference in the educational success of a student,” says Roanoke County Public Schools community relations specialist, Chuck Lionberger.
On September 11, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., the school system is seeking applicants for bus drivers and substitute bus drivers/aides.
“Our bus drivers are really like first impressions and last impressions. They can make a student’s day in the morning. They can help take maybe not such a good day and wrap it up and end it in a good way,” says Lionberger.
Currently, the county has enough people to fill the roles on a daily basis, but they are often understaffed if someone calls out for the day. In that case, staff from other areas often have to fill in.
“When we have somebody who is jumping in, such as a mechanic or an administrator or somebody like that who has to jump in and drive a bus, that disrupts the entire operation,” says Lionberger.
Those who plan to attend the job fair will be able to complete an application on-site and may be eligible for on-the-spot interviews.
No experience is required for the positions, but a heart for kids is.
“We want that student’s whole day to be a good positive experience and it takes everybody working together to make sure that student has a good positive, learning day,” says Lionberger.
Some candidates may be asked to complete a background check prior to being hired – candidates are strongly recommended to bring a check or money order for $25 payable to Roanoke County Public Schools should you be asked to complete a background check.
