Safety experts stress calling 811 during National Safe Digging Month

Virginia News

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — With warmer temperatures here, many people have the urge to begin to spruce up their yard with plants or maybe a new fence or deck.

However, there’s the potential for danger if you don’t take certain steps.

April is National Safe Digging Month, and a recent survey shows nearly two in five people will put themselves and their communities at risk by digging without calling 811 ahead of time.

Nikki Turpin with Virginia 811 joined Good Day Virginia to talk about who is responsible for calling, and the dangers and penalties people who interrupt utility services could face.
