(WFXR) – National Work Zone Awareness Week runs from April 26-30.

The initiative is meant to bring awareness for all drivers that crews who are performing their job on the side of roads across the country are many times just feet away from traffic flowing at, at times, high speeds.

When traveling through work zones, be mindful that crews could be working in areas that they cannot be seen.

So, drivers should always slow down when driving through a work zone and avoid any distractions, such as texting or talking on a cell phone, which is illegal in Virginia.

VDOT is also encouraging everyone to wear orange by participating in “Go Orange Day” on Wednesday, April 28 as part of this year’s theme, “Drive Safe, Work Safe, Save Lives.”

VDOT has made a video to promote being alert when driving through a work zone. That video can be viewed below.
