‘It’s been a great relief’: Four-year-long search for missing Marion, Va. woman ends

MARION, Va. (WJHL) – Marion Police Chief John Clair expressed words of relief after a Southwest Virginia woman reported missing in 2017 was found safe Tuesday.

Jami Megan-LaBeth Pakacki was first reported missing on May 19, 2017.

“I have said from the beginning that even after thousands of man-hours of work, dozens of search warrants and multiple interviews that if she was found at Subway working in some obscure location that I would be exceptionally pleased,” Clair told our sister-station WJHL’s Amy Cockerham. “That feeling hasn’t changed. It’s been a great relief for the agency, for the town.”

Clair said why Pakacki went missing was a question he couldn’t answer.

“The answers to those questions are complex and personal,” Clair said. “I’m sure there is a complexity to be unraveled, but that complexity is the business of her and her family.”

Clair said Pakachi was found after law enforcement responded to a call.

“A regional law enforcement agency responded to a non-criminal call for service, where she was present,” Clair said. “They identified her, and that’s how they discovered she had been entered as missing and endangered.”

Marion Police said in a post on Tuesday night that Clair and two other department officers traveled to the jurisdiction Pakacki was in and spoke with her in person after receiving the call.

“I think what Megan made clear to me last night when I spoke with her is that she had a lot of conversation and work to do with her family and those who love her,” Clair said. “And that she desired privacy as that process went forward.”
