UPDATE: Victim of prison inmate attack at Wallens Ridge identified

UPDATE 8:40 a.m. (11/21/21): The Virginia Department of Corrections has identified the inmate who died from an apparent homicide inside Wallens Ridge State Prison in Big Stone Gap.

According to the department, 47-year-old Gregory Pierce died after another inmate reportedly attacked him inside a cell at the prison on Saturday, Nov. 20.

The incident remains under investigation.

RICHMOND, Va. (WFXR) – An inmate is dead after an attack involving another inmate on Saturday afternoon at Wallens Ridge State Prison, authorities say.

According to the Virginia Department of Corrections, the 47-year-old victim was pronounced dead at 12:35 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 20 at Lonesome Pine Hospital in Big Stone Gap.

The department says the victim was serving multiple life sentences for sexual offenses, including rape.

Meanwhile, the inmate accused of attacking the victim is currently serving a life sentence for murder, according to officials.

The death is being ruled a homicide. However, the victim’s identity is being withheld while the next of kin is being notified.
