Update: Inmate at Lawrenceville Correctional Center found dead in prison identified

UPDATE 12:44 p.m.: The Lawrenceville Correctional Center released the name of the victim of an apparent homicide that happened on the evening of Aug. 3.

They say Mark A. Grethen was found dead shortly after 9 p.m. on Tuesday in the prison.

LAWRENCEVILLE, Va. (WRIC/WFXR) — An inmate at Lawrenceville Correctional Center has died after being attacked in their cell by another inmate Tuesday night, the Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC) announced Wednesday.

Officials say the victim — a 63-year-old man who was serving a 26-year sentence for crimes including forcible sodomy and aggravated sexual battery — was pronounced dead shortly after 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 3 in the prison.

According to VADOC, the “apparent assailant” is serving a 22-year sentence for crimes including robbery, malicious wounding, and assault by an inmate or probationer on an employee.

The department says the incident is being investigated as a homicide.

Lawrenceville Correctional Center is Virginia’s only privatized prison and is operated by the GEO Group, Inc.
