NEW KENT COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — Live horse racing returns next week to the Colonial Downs Racetrack in New Kent County next week.

According to Colonial Downs, the racetrack is open for the 2022 season from Monday, July 11, to Wednesday, Sept. 7. Horse races are every Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday at 1:45 p.m.

The family-friendly atmosphere always has free general admission and free parking, the company says. Casual dining, private suites, outdoor clubhouse boxes, reserved grandstand seating, and a hospitality tent are open to everyone. Food trucks are stationed along the grandstand apron for concession purchase.

Colonials Downs says this season has more races than ever before with 27 race dates.

“Our theme this year is more racing, more fun! With everything we have to offer, including free general admission we are looking forward to big crowds, exciting races, and lots of fun this summer,” John Marshall, executive vice president of operations at Colonial Downs Group, said.

This season will have five promotional giveaway days, beginning with a Secretariat t-shirt on opening day, according to the company. Other giveaways include a water bottle, a hat, a plush horse, and a cooling towel. Also, for the first time in 21 years, the track will be open on Labor Day afternoon.
