LEESBURG, Va. (WFXR) – Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring is continuing his fight against the abortion ban in Texas.
On Wednesday, Herring announced that he is joining 24 other attorneys general from around the country in support of the U.S. Department of Justice’s lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of the ban.
“What we are seeing in Texas is a perfect illustration of what could happen in Virginia if Republicans are elected. Attorney General Mark Herring has been steadfast in protecting the right to choose and his decision to support the Department of Justice’s lawsuit is a perfect example of just that. While Attorney General Herring has always stood up to protect the right to choose, the same cannot be said for his Republican opponent, Jason Miyares. Miyares has continually voted to strip women of the right to choose and his voting record is flat-out dangerous. Like many in our Commonwealth, Attorney General Herring will not stand idly by and watch reproductive rights be shredded by the Texas legislature or by Jason Miyares.”Madia Coleman, Communications Director for the Re-Election of Mark Herring
In the brief, filed on Wednesday, Herring argues the ban violates 50 years of precedent by the Supreme Court.
Texas’ “Heartbeat Bill” is considered to nation’s most restrictive abortion law which bans abortions once a heartbeat is detected – typically around six weeks.
Enforcement is essentially left to private citizens through civil lawsuits.
The White House is also asking a federal judge in Texas to halt the state’s law.
