CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WJZY) — A North Carolina police officer was shot by a 14-year-old near an apartment complex in east Charlotte Monday morning, according to police.

The Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department says the shooting happened near the Woodland Estates Apartment Homes off Reddman Road near the 6100 block of Treetop Court on Monday, Dec. 27.

Officers responded to a report of a person breaking into a car, but a person at the scene told police the suspect had pointed a gun at them. When officers arrived, the teenage suspect began to run away.

During the foot pursuit, police say the teenager turned around and fired at officers, hitting one. Police returned fire but did not hit the teen.

Authorities say the officer was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Officials confirmed the suspect was a 14-year-old. The teen was taken into custody and is facing robbery and attempted murder charges.

A crew from WFXR’s sister station, WJZY, said at least 20 police vehicles were at the crime scene following the shooting.
