CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. (WFXR) – A couple traveling through Virginia is $2 million richer after picking up Powerball tickets – one of which ended up matching all five of the main numbers, minus the Powerball number!

But there’s an interesting side to this story.

The couple, Jerry and Teresa Maples were traveling through 11 states and in each state, they bought a couple of lottery tickets.

One of their stops was in Christiansburg, at the Stop In Food Store at 2375 Roanoke Street. That’s where they purchased the winning ticket.

“It still doesn’t feel real yet,” said Teresa Maples.

The couple, from Hamlet, North Carolina, matched the first five numbers in the Sept. 27 Powerball drawing.

Normally, by matching all five numbers, the top prize is $1 million; however, the couple spent an extra dollar for the Power Play which doubled their prize to $2 million.

The winning numbers for that drawing were 21-22-39-44-60 with the Powerball number being 12.

They used Easy Pick and allowed the computer to randomly select the numbers on their ticket.

Had the couple matched all six numbers, they would have won the top jackpot which was estimated at $545 million. Their ticket was the only one in the country to match the first five numbers.
