‘Cicada Safari’ app launched to help track, avoid cicadas

Regional News

(WFXR) — The cicadas are making a big entrance this spring!

Millions of cicadas are expected to emerge after 17 years, but there’s an app called “Cicada Safari” that can help you track — or avoid — them and the noise.

“It goes on a live map showing the emergence starting in Georgia and slowly moving north,” said Gene Kritsky, Dean of Natural and Behavioral Sciences at Mount St. Joseph University.

Some people are worried that the cicadas will swarm like locusts. However, it’ll actually be more of what you’ll hear rather than what you see.

Experts say the cicadas are most active during the day, so that’s when you can expect to hear their well-known sound.
